DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

BRIEF HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION

The department was founded as part of the University of Crete in 1977. Since then it has grown to having 38 faculty members (13 of them are visitors), 600 undergraduate and 17 graduate students.

Despite of its peripheral location and the economic difficulties (low salaries and low research founding -among the lowset in Europe-), the Department is increasingly attracting a large number of scientists, especially young ones mainly from abroad, to an extent far greater than any other Greek University. The main reasons for this competitive and expansive nature of the Department are the infux of young highly qualified personnel and its strong interaction with the Foundation of Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) and with the four other departments (Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science) of the School of Sciences.
